Sample 1, is a rare picture of Barb's Grandmother, shot in the "mid-50s". It was probably shot with a Kodak Instamatic and then enlarged to 8" x 10", so original resolution was poor. During the 50 years since exposure, noticeable but not extreme discoloration has occurred. The most significant problem is the result of creases, folds and bending and "tape tracks" crossing the print surface in at least three places.
Sample 2, was taken during the mid 1920's of a 4th or 5th grade class in Westwood MA. Barb's dad is sitting in the third seat of row two. This black-white has undergone discoloration during the 80, or so, years since it was taken. There was also a fair amount of specking and general breakdown across the surface of this print. The picture is clearer now, see the flowers on the window sill.
Sample 4, is another shot of Barb's dad, Bill, taken about 1918, at the family home. Its not hard to see the discoloration and overall fading that has occurred to this print. But, don't be fooled, just below the fade are many cuts, scratches, nicks and other surface problems.
Sample 3, was taken with a Kodak Brownie Box camera, and was fuzzy from the beginning. It is of me and my sister Carol on the back porch of our tenement in Somerville MA during 1947. The original print was not too discolored, but had a piece missing, and was full of nicks, scratches, folds and other problems.
Sample 5, is of Barb and me on our big day, Aug 20, 1966. As you can see, this 35mm shot has begun to fade and discolor, but otherwise the print has maintained itself, better than we have.
Sample 6, is an action shot of Matt, taken in the early 80's with an inferior camera and marginal development. Discoloration and yellowing has progressed on the original print to the point of masking detail. The poor resolution has been sharpened somewhat and the color returned to near normal.
